CAPE COD ASSOCIATION ANNOUNCES 2009 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS
Cape scholarship group will help hundreds realize dreams of higher education
Yarmouthport – June 29, 2009 – The Cape Cod Association, one of the oldest and largest independent scholarship funds in New England, is pleased to announce its 2009 scholarship recipients, including 76 from the Lower and Outer Cape. According to Nancy Snow Lowery, Association Board Vice President and Scholarship Chair, the organization received more than 550 applications and awarded over $375,000 to almost 300 Cape and Islands students this year.
The Association, founded in 1851, is dedicated to helping students who were born and reside on Cape Cod achieve success in higher education. It offers scholarships to graduating high school seniors and current college students to attend two- or four-year colleges or technical schools anywhere in the United States. Although students must reapply each year, they are eligible for funding over all four years of their undergraduate education. Awards are based on a combination of factors: Cape heritage; academic merit; financial need; and community/extracurricular involvement.
This year’s recipients include students in the top of their class, students who have made great strides despite being challenged by a variety of obstacles, students who have made significant contributions to their schools and their community through volunteerism, and students with the clear drive and determination to follow their dreams. Recipients include future doctors, engineers, scientists, therapists, teachers, artists, police officers, and business men and women, just to name a few.
“We are inspired by the strength and commitment of the young people on Cape Cod and the Islands who recognize the limitless possibilities for their future,” says David “Woody” Foster, Jr., Cape Cod Association Board President and Scholarship Committee member. “We wish them all the best of luck and hope to stay apprised of their successes.”
Foster is joined on the scholarship committee by: Nancy S. Lowery (Scholarship Chair, Board Vice President); Sherry Greene-Starr; Peggy Hannigan; Sally W. Helwig (Board Treasurer); Bruce MacKilligan; Susan Oates; Pam Patton; James Vaccaro (Board Member); Ann Ward; Corinne Wickel; and Susan T. Wright (Board Clerk)
