CHATHAM BEACHES UPDATE - LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS & SWIMMERS August 25, 2010, 12:00 p.m.

Published on Wednesday, August 25, 2010

Over the past weeks there have been several confirmed shark sightings within the shallow waters of Chatham’s barrier beaches. The majority of the sightings have been along South Beach; however, there have been additional sightings off Monomoy and North Beach. On Saturday, 21 August, 2010 a shark was successfully tagged off the entrance to Chatham Harbor. No sharks have been reported sighted inside Chatham Harbor since Thursday, August 12, 2010.

By order of the Harbormaster, as issued in July 30, 2010 notice to mariners and swimmers, the east side of South Beach remains closed to swimmers.

All other Chatham beaches remain open to swimming except in those areas that are within 300 feet of observed seals. People are encouraged to pay close attention to their surrounding while they are in the water and to not venture too far from the shore.

If a shark is sighted, please get out of the water and contact the proper authorities:
