LOCAL NOTICE TO MARINERS & SWIMMERS

3:00 p.m. E.S.T. September 01, 2010

As a result of the passing of Hurricane Danielle and the approaching Category 3 Hurricane Earl, effective 11:00 a.m. E.S.T. September 2, 2010, all ocean-side east facing Chatham beaches are experiencing high surf conditions. As Hurricane Earl nears the east coast and tracks north towards New England, the high surf conditions will only get worse. Therefore, by order of the Chatham Harbormaster all ocean-side east facing beaches within Chatham are closed to swimming. This includes Lighthouse Beach and all ocean-side east facing beaches from the Chatham/Orleans border south to Monomoy Island. In addition to remaining out of the water at all affected beaches, beach goers should avoid walking too close to the shoreline where high surf is present, as strong under currents pose a significant risk.

All mariners are again reminded to take early action to protect your boats. Boats that can be trailered should be hauled well ahead of the storm arriving to avoid the last minute rush at local boat ramps. For boats that cannot be trailered, boat owners should consider relocating their boats to a different harbor or safe haven, as Chatham is exposed on all sides to heavy storm conditions. For boats that must remain on a mooring in Chatham, mooring permit holders

For additional information or advice contact the Chatham Harbormaster Department or your local marina.

Thank you for your attention,

Stay up-to-date!
