Glace Bay, Nova Scotia: Where the Atlantic was Conquered and Global Wireless Began
Chatham Marconi Maritime Center welcomes Mr. Matthew Cook to its virtual Speaker Series on June 2 at 7:00 PM EDT
After storms destroyed infrastructure at Wellfleet, Cape Cod and cable company interests pushed him out of Newfoundland, Marconi chose Table Head, Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada as his permanent North American base. It was here, from Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, that trans-Atlantic wireless telegraphic messaging began, more than a month before Marconi again demonstrated trans-Atlantic wireless from Cape Cod. Glace Bay was the site of the world’s first commercial service for trans-Atlantic wireless messaging. Matthew Cook will speak from Marconi National Historic Site, where the ruins of Marconi’s first permanent North American station can be found, along with a museum explaining the significance of the place to Marconi’s “Great Thing.”
