Children and teens will have a chance to join in the excavation of the c. 1664 homestead of William and Anne Nickerson, the "father and mother of Chatham," on Thurs., Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. to noon. Rain date is Aug. 29.
Kids will excavate an actual pit under the direction of archaeologist Craig Chartier, who leads the 17thcentury excavation, now in its second season. This is a rare chance to gain hands-on experience and learn how an archaeologist interprets the centuries-old mysteries hidden under the ground.
Children under eight must be accompanied by an adult. Preregistration required. The cost of the program is $20. To register, go to the Nickerson Family Association, Inc. store at https://nickersonassoc.com/store/KIDS-DIG-Archaeology-for-Children-p145885147 For more information call 508-945-6086 or email wmnick1107@gmail.com. The dig site is behind 1107 Orleans Road, North Chatham, the campus of the Nickerson Family Association, Inc., sponsors of the dig in conjunction with the Chatham Conservation Foundation, Inc.
