Decoding the Samuel F.B. Morse Papers at the Library of Congress
Chatham Marconi Maritime Center welcomes Joshua Levy, PhD to its virtual Speaker Series on March 3 at 7:00 PM EST
The Samuel F.B. Morse Papers, held at the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress, consist of over 10,000 items documenting Morse’s life and career as a portrait painter, inventor, and promoter of those inventions. The collection contains correspondence, diaries, scrapbooks, photographs, and many other items, including a tape of the world’s first telegraphic message: “What hath God wrought.” In this talk, Dr. Levy will highlight collection items that shed light on Samuel Morse and his code and explain how researchers can use the recently digitized Morse Papers themselves, to explore the early origins of Morse code and to discover some of the many unexpected research and teaching possibilities the collection offers.About Our Speaker: Joshua (Josh) Levy is the historian of science and technology at the Manuscript Division of the Library of Congress, and curator of the Samuel F.B. Morse Papers. He holds a PhD in modern U.S. history from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Master of Theological Studies degree from Harvard Divinity School, and has taught history and indigenous studies courses at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of South Florida, College of Micronesia-FSM, and Pohnpei Island Central School.About the Chatham Marconi Speaker SeriesPrograms are presented on the first Thursday of each month. Subjects are drawn from the resources of the Marconi-RCA Wireless Museum, the Center’s STEM Education program, or member-suggested topics related to its mission. For the foreseeable future the series will be presented virtually, or if conditions permit in a hybrid format with a limited live audience.Images
