Author Rachel Slade: Into the Raging Sea

Author Rachel Slade presents a program in Chatham Marconi's Ed Fouhy Distinguished Speaker Series entitled "Into the Raging Sea: The Story of a Modern Shipwreck", live at the Chatham Orpheum Theater and live-streamed via Zoom.  She will speak about her research into the sinking of the SS El Faro, the stories behind the tragedy, and writing her award-winning book.

On October 1, 2015, Hurricane Joaquin barreled into the Bermuda Triangle and swallowed the container ship El Faro whole, resulting in the deadliest American shipping disaster in thirty-five years. No one could fathom how a vessel equipped with satellite communications, a sophisticated navigation system, and cutting-edge weather forecasting could suddenly vanish...

Relying on hundreds of exclusive interviews with family members and maritime experts as well as the recorded words of the crew members themselves to write her award-winning book Into the Raging Sea, journalist Rachel Slade unraveled the mystery of the sinking of SS El Faro. Recounting the final hours onboard, Slade vividly depicted the officers’ anguish and fear as they struggled to carry out Captain Michael Davidson’s increasingly bizarre commands, which, they knew, would steer them straight into the eye of the storm. Taking a hard look at America's aging merchant marine fleet, Ms. Slade's book also revealed the truth about modern shipping—a cut-throat industry plagued by razor-thin profits and ever more violent hurricanes fueled by global warming.

About the Ed Fouhy Distinguished Speaker Series

Edward M. Fouhy (1934-2015) was a communications professional and award-winning television journalist who brought the world and its stories to the American public.  While a volunteer at the Center, Ed wrote and produced two videos explaining for museum visitors the importance of wireless radio communications to the rescue of RMS Titanic's survivors, and the outcome of the Battle of the Atlantic during WWII.  In his honor, the Distinguished Speaker Series is designed to promote knowledge and understanding of history and world events, with a special focus on the science and development of communications technology and its profound effect on our lives.
